My NAT Type turned to Moderate (which is compatible with Open) and I could then join my friends lobby. TL;DR: If you have a Strict NAT type, you can only join others with Strict NAT Type. If your NAT type is Open or Moderate, you can join others with Open or Moderate NAT type. Strict + Open/Moderate does NOT work.
