The performance of a jake is second to none. The brake power of an exhaust brake is not even close to that of jake brake. The exhaust brake just blocks the flow of the exhaust. A jake will open and close the valves on the engine heads at different times to make the engine take power instead of make power. I would not settle for anything less...

The tech figured out it was the high/low switch, but a replacement was not available, so he added two single pole switches to use. It seemed to work on level ground so we headed to Alaska.

The first thing that comes to mind is an intermitant problem with your clutch switch. I have seen this before. It the clutch switch or wiring is faulty the engine ECU may think you are pushing in the clutch and in turn will not allow the Jakes to work. Next is the accelerator pedal may not be going all the way back to idle.
